The Process & Prices
The tailored kilt isn’t just about fashion – it carries a rich cultural meaning that can give you a strong sense of heritage and identity.
Personal & Unique
Getting a custom kilt made is your chance to create something totally personal and unique. Every bit of the process is done by hand, from the first fitting to the very last stitch.
Each kilt uses 8 to 10 meters of 100% wool cloth, which is woven here in the UK. I also use two kinds of canvas, a black cotton lining, and the straps and chapes are handcrafted by a local leatherworker here in Cornwall.
A tailored adult kilt will be with you for life, which can be worn for all your big celebratory events as well as your more relaxing days. Wearing your kilt, whether at a fancy do, or just out for a walk, brings a real sense of joy to the wearer.
Pleating
Your Cornish kilt can be pleated just how you like it, the traditional Knife Edge, Military, or the Historical Box pleat. The pleats can create a bold and colourful look which can make your kilt really stand out. Different pleating styles can show off the tartan and its patterns in different ways.
Sett pleating means the pleats are sewn so the tartan pattern lines up perfectly across them. How easy this is depends on the tartan design and this is where my kilt tailoring skill really shine, with an eye for detail I ensure that everything looks just right.
To start the process, I would initially meet the wearer for a measuring appointment, different pleating style could also be discussed at this stage too.
The second appointment would be the mid-fitting with the majority of the work being completed. The kilt is tried on and looked at in detail for any changes that may be needed before the finishing touches are done.
The final fitting is to make sure that myself and the wearer is completely happy with your finished kilt, and if so, you are able to take the kilt away with you to start to wear and enjoy!
Kilts for Children
I can also tailor a bespoke ‘little kilt’ for children. These are made with future proofing in mind where the kilt can be easily altered with a hem to let up or down and a girth that can also be altered for 4 to 5 years of the childs life. It can then be passed down to the next generation.
Kilts for Women
Ladies kilts can be made upon request also.
Alterations & Adjustments
A handmade kilt should last a lifetime, however, should you need a kilt altering or adjusting, please get in touch and make an appointment and I will do my best to find a solution to the issue and get the kilt in a wearable condition once more. Please note kilts would need to be seen on the wearer to make the necessary changes.
Prices
An adult kilt starts from £800 depending on the chosen tartan.
A childs kilt starts from £500.
An initial 40% is required at the first measuring, with a second and third payment required at the mid and final fittings.
